What you’ll learn

LO1 — Perform a structured preoperative nursing assessment and preparation, identifying factors that require clarification, optimization or escalation before transfer to theatre.
LO2 — Apply perioperative patient-safety principles including identity/procedure/site verification, consent verification, surgical safety checklist, time-out, allergy and medication checks, infection prevention and safe handover.
LO3 — Explain essential intraoperative nursing safety principles including asepsis, positioning, pressure/nerve protection, counts, specimen management, equipment/electrosurgical/fire awareness and maintenance of normothermia.
LO4 — Conduct a structured immediate postoperative/PACU assessment and recognize airway compromise, respiratory depression, hemorrhage/shock, severe pain, PONV, hypothermia, delirium and other deterioration requiring escalation.
LO5 — Support safe postoperative recovery, ward transfer and discharge through pain and nausea assessment, wound/drain monitoring, VTE and pulmonary-complication prevention, mobilization, education, documentation and culturally responsive GCC communication.
