What you’ll learn

LO1 — Explain the respiratory and metabolic regulation of pH and identify the major ABG variables used to assess ventilation, oxygenation and acid-base status.
LO2 — Interpret adult ABGs systematically to identify acidemia/alkalemia, the primary respiratory or metabolic disorder, expected compensation and common mixed disorders.
LO3 — Relate ABG abnormalities to common clinical causes including respiratory failure, COPD, sepsis/lactic acidosis, diabetic ketoacidosis, vomiting and renal dysfunction.
LO4 — Recognize critical ABG patterns and specimen/pre-analytical problems that require immediate validation, ABCDE assessment and escalation.
LO5 — Document and communicate ABG findings safely using clinical context, oxygen delivery/FiO2, trends and SBAR, while adapting to GCC employer and laboratory policies.

About this module

MOD-009 is module 4 of 5 in 1.2 Health Assessment & Basic Clinical Skills, inside Domain 1: Nursing Fundamentals & Clinical Essentials.

Adult acid-base physiology, systematic arterial blood gas (ABG) interpretation, oxygenation/ventilation assessment, compensation, anion-gap reasoning, specimen safety and deterioration recognition. Reference intervals vary by laboratory, altitude and clinical context. This module does not authorize independent arterial puncture, ventilator adjustment, bicarbonate therapy or electrolyte correction outside local scope and prescription.

The course runs the full NMS competency journey: a diagnostic that maps your starting point, 21 illustrated lessons built from the approved course pack, 2 branching clinical scenarios, a digital simulation, quick-reference and flashcard revision, and a 41-question summative assessment at an 80% pass mark.

Audience: Internationally educated registered nurses preparing for GCC clinical practice and licensure.
