What you’ll learn

LO1 — Perform a structured gastrointestinal and bowel assessment, using stool characteristics and elimination patterns to recognize constipation, diarrhea, fecal impaction, obstruction and other red flags.
LO2 — Apply safe bowel-management principles, including non-pharmacological measures, prescribed bowel protocols, medication review, infection precautions and escalation.
LO3 — Assess and provide routine nursing care for a colostomy or ileostomy, including stoma, output, pouching system and peristomal skin assessment.
LO4 — Recognize and respond to stoma complications including ischemia/necrosis, retraction, prolapse, mucocutaneous separation, peristomal skin damage, obstruction and high-output ileostomy with dehydration risk.
LO5 — Educate and support patients and families in bowel/stoma self-management using culturally responsive GCC communication, safe documentation and multidisciplinary referral.
