What you’ll learn

LO1 — Perform a structured assessment of urinary elimination and recognize retention, incontinence, oliguria/anuria, hematuria, dysuria and other findings requiring escalation.
LO2 — Select the least invasive appropriate bladder-management strategy, distinguishing appropriate indications, alternatives and avoidable uses of indwelling urinary catheters.
LO3 — Explain and apply safe principles of intermittent and indwelling urinary catheterization, including patient identification, consent, aseptic technique, equipment preparation, insertion safety and documentation.
LO4 — Maintain a urinary catheter and drainage system safely, prevent CAUTI, obtain specimens correctly, identify complications and support prompt catheter removal.
LO5 — Provide person-centred bladder care, post-removal monitoring, patient/family education, culturally responsive GCC communication and timely multidisciplinary escalation.
