What you’ll learn

LO1 — Explain pain as a multidimensional personal experience and distinguish acute, subacute and chronic pain, including nociceptive, neuropathic and nociplastic mechanisms.
LO2 — Perform and document a structured pain assessment using validated self-report or observational tools, functional impact, red flags and patient goals.
LO3 — Apply multimodal pain-management principles using appropriate non-pharmacological and prescribed non-opioid/opioid strategies, with individualized risk-benefit assessment.
LO4 — Monitor effectiveness and adverse effects of analgesic therapy, recognize opioid-induced sedation/respiratory depression and other safety risks, and escalate deterioration promptly.
LO5 — Support chronic-pain self-management, function and shared decision-making while communicating sensitively across language, cultural and GCC practice contexts.

About this module

MOD-010 is module 5 of 5 in 1.2 Health Assessment & Basic Clinical Skills, inside Domain 1: Nursing Fundamentals & Clinical Essentials.

Adult acute and chronic pain assessment, person-centred goals, multimodal non-pharmacological and pharmacological strategies, opioid safety, reassessment, escalation and GCC communication. Medication choice, dose, route, controlled-drug requirements and advanced pain interventions must follow the current prescription, local formulary, pharmacy policy and scope of practice.

The course runs the full NMS competency journey: a diagnostic that maps your starting point, 20 illustrated lessons built from the approved course pack, 2 branching clinical scenarios, a digital simulation, quick-reference and flashcard revision, and a 41-question summative assessment at an 80% pass mark.

Audience: Internationally educated registered nurses preparing for GCC clinical practice and licensure.
